Inner Circle Q&A
What book have you given or recommended the most?
Never Confuse a Memo with Reality by Richard Moran. This is a book of great common sense that I handout to about everyone from new hires to CEO’s and my two sons.
I also like Freakonomics by Steven Levitt. It explains vexing social issues with the lens of an economist and some obscure data. It makes you think unconventionally.
If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be?
I’d probably only last one day in any other job! I’d like to be Mayor for a day and fix the traffic lights in Denver. There has to be a better to way to synchronize traffic and improve flows. It drives me nuts when traffic is backed up for a mile at a light going one way waiting for no cross traffic.
How would you describe your leadership style?
I try to focus on the long term strategy and not focus too much on short-term results. I love a good debate about alternatives and conflicting needs but will get impatient if it takes too long or there is too much analysis.
What are some industry trends that have an impact on your role as a leader?
Real time data and information has changed about everything including expectations for action. Everyone does so much more in less time (productivity) that the pace of work is very different and challenging. We are scheduled in 30 minute increments even when a day might be needed to really solve a problem. It seems like everything is urgent and it is hard to spend extended time when needed.
