If you've been dying to see a good show at Red Rocks, but you aren't into glow sticks and puking teens, John Butler Trio on Friday night is the perfect opportunity. This Australian roots and jam band bumps out great music that will leave you feeling higher than the 6,400+ feet in which you already stand. As a member of the Red Rocks Video Crew, I've seen more than a neapolitan of different acts. In my findings as someone concentrated on getting shots and listening to the director - all while trying to decide if it's a good show or not - I have found that the "bands" that bring energy, play a bunch of cool instruments and have a good camaraderie with the crowd are far more fun to film than let's say- a solo DJ act.
While I do enjoy my fair share of EDM, 99% of those shows are all about the DJ being in the dark, lasers on the crowd and bass as loud as it gets. This doesn't exactly provide the ideal lighting conditions for video recording. We usually just end up locking off one or two of the four cameras on their tripod(s) and praying for some light to enter the censor. Not always a successful mission. Then, they just stand atop some huge pile of LED panels and hide, so yeah, it gets boring shooting DJs. Not all of them. This isn't the case with bands that play actual musical instruments. There's always something to shoot and there's follow spots on the band members, so you can actually get a shot and the concerts seem to just fly by.
You can still get "sold out" tickets to John Butler Trio at 7:00 on Friday, June 4, 2014, right here. If you make it to the show, I want to see some of those cool photos you get with your phone. There're some epic jurassic shots to be had at Red Rocks Amphitheater on any given night. I took all the photos in the above collage with my old Thunderbolt phone LOL.
****If you get a sick shot of me filming with the band in the photo,
send it to me and I'll give you $20 via PayPal. Applies all season long.*****
